GST credit notes and debit notes
Credit notes reduce tax payable on a supply already invoiced. Debit notes increase it. Both stay in the same GST books as the original invoice.
Educational summary. Not legal, tax, or filing advice. Confirm with the notified GST law and your Chartered Accountant.
Credit note
Used when taxable value or tax is reduced after a tax invoice: returns, discounts after invoice, corrections. It references the original invoice in your process even if the PDF layout varies.
Debit note
Used when taxable value or tax must go up after the original invoice.
